"You have 250 new mail messages" And only 15 are actually for you, this is spam ! Back at the early 90', when people around was asking questions like: "your computer is connected to the interwhat?" chat was MIRC, most popular internet browser was Netscape, we felt like pioneers on a new secret planet. The interactive world had enormous changes since then, today almost every one knows about internet, blogs, chat, feeds, file sharing and e-mail. The problems begin when jerks use the advantage of this technology, and the absence of effective law for there own purpose by annoying internet users with mass of unwanted commercial massages. You can find anti-spam add-ins, software and services that fight spam all around the internet, most of them use filtering techniques to identify and block junk mail. (Some of them are brought here) the real issue that anti-spam technology have to handle is the identification of the those messages and try to find who is actually sending them, the spammers hides behind fake e-mail addresses, they are using e-mail servers that allow anonymous message sending, some time the e-mail message contain text within an image that prevent e-mail servers to "read" the content of the message and make the identification even harder. In some states there is no law against spam, politics and bureaucracy takes some times as you know. Some states law allow to send commercial electronic messages as long as they supply a link within the message body to an unsubscribe e-form. The logic says that filling a request form for removing your e-mail address from data bases is just another action that cost us time, on the other hand some spammers uses those unsubscribe forms to make sure you received the junk mail and validate your e-mail address. Imagine that you should fill 50 "remove" forms every day... We cannot trust on technology only, the law is not effective enough and can't be global. The solution must come from the problem itself, the only real way to stop spam is to make it not profitable to those dealers and commerce's. No business will pay for reaching mass e-mail data base if it won't make any income Don't click links on junk mail, and most of that, never buy product or services of those junk mail promotions or the companies and dealers they represent. Search for the same product or service on a reliable search engine or publicities, I'm sure you will find appropriate results that feats your needs, price and requests.
